Excelled in both football and track for Eastern Michigan, earning four varsity letters in each sport in 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1965...Served as co-captain of the football team in 1965, and earned All-American honors as a half-miler in June 1966...One of the top hitters and defensive backs in college football, and outstanding middle-distance man in track...Ran as EMU's No. 1 miler for four years and set several meet and varsity records competing in the mile, 1,000-yard, 880-yard run, intermediate hurdles, javelin, distance medley relay, two-mile relay, mile relay, and 4 x110-yard relay...His 1:51.2 880-yard time was second-best in school history when he graduated...Ran the leadoff leg in the mile and two-mile relay teams that set new school indoor and outdoor records...Also ran on the two-mile relay team that set an EMU record with a time of 7:32.8 in the 1966 season that stood for five years until it was broken in 1970...Went on to try out with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers but injuries ended his attempt at making the team.
