Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson had an impressive track career, carving his name in the mid-distance record book. CJ holds varsity records for events no longer held, placing him forever in the top 10. He owns the fifth-best time in EMU history in the 200-meter hurdles at 24.40 seconds, and in the indoor 600-yard run at 1:09.75 seconds. CJ was a MAC Champion in the 500-meter run in 1987. The 400 meter was CJ’s sweet spot though, making it to two NCAA meets. Moving outdoors, CJ was the only EMU track athlete to double in the open 400 meter and 400-meter hurdles at the Mid-American Outdoor Conference in 1987 and 1988. He ran the third fastest time in Eastern history, 50.76 seconds, in the 400-meter hurdles. In the 400-meter run, CJ crossed the line in 46.28 seconds putting him seventh in the record book. CJ also played a crucial part in the 1986 4x400 meter relay, where his role as anchor for the indoor and outdoor teams helped achieve current varsity records. Carl Johnson is a pillar of Eastern’s Track and Field program.
